United States Deploys New Troop Rotation to Lithuania

The United States is deploying a new rotation of troops to Lithuania, ending a period of uncertainty after forces returned home during the summer. President Gitanas Nauseda confirmed the deployment on September 22, noting that the military presence is an indispensable part of collective defense. Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys stated that the deployment is returning to large numbers, though specific figures were not disclosed. Since 2019, the U.S. has typically maintained an armored battalion of approximately 1,000 troops in the country to deter Russia and Belarus.

The deployment follows a diplomatic mission by Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas, who began a week-long visit to the United States on September 21. Kaunas met with US Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, members of Congress, and leadership from the Pennsylvania National Guard to discuss bilateral security and the State Partnership Programme.

Lithuania has emerged as the largest buyer of US arms among the Baltic States, purchasing approximately €2 billion in equipment over the last three years, including HIMARS, Javelin systems, and Black Hawk helicopters. The new troop rotation arrives amid a broader review of U.S. military presence and withdrawals from other bases across Europe.
