Michigan Democrats Finalize Statewide Ticket Amid Internal Friction

The Michigan Democratic Party finalized its statewide ticket on Saturday during a nominating convention at the Lansing Center. The party officially nominated Jocelyn Benson for governor, Winnie Brinks for lieutenant governor, Garlin Gilchrist for secretary of state, and Eli Savit for attorney general.

Despite public calls for unity to defeat Republican opponents and the Trump administration in the November 3 general election, the event highlighted deep internal rifts. Gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson and U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed did not share the stage or mention one another in their speeches, signaling ongoing tension between the party's moderate and progressive wings following a contentious primary.

Further instability was evident as Attorney General Dana Nessel boycotted the convention, citing harassment concerns and perceived anti-Semitism within the organization. The gathering follows a Republican convention in Mount Pleasant, where the GOP nominated John James for governor and Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate.
