John Oliver Criticizes Rise of Extremism in Republican Party

Comedian John Oliver dedicated a full episode of Last Week Tonight to criticizing a rise in extremism and bigotry within the Republican Party ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. Oliver cited several examples of what he termed Nazi-adjacent behavior, including an apparent Nazi salute by mega-donor Elon Musk and goose-stepping videos produced by candidate Brandon Herrera.
Oliver focused heavily on the influence of white nationalist Nick Fuentes on mainstream Republican leaders. He noted that Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene delivered keynote speeches at conferences hosted by Fuentes, and referenced a dinner between Fuentes and Donald Trump. Oliver further cited a Manhattan Institute analysis suggesting nearly 40% of Republicans believe the Holocaust was exaggerated or did not happen.
Concluding that the party is at a crossroads, Oliver argued that the GOP must reckon with the infiltration of white nationalists and neo-Nazis as it determines its future leadership.
