Argentina Renews $19 Billion Currency Swap With China
The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic renewed a $19 billion currency swap agreement with the People's Bank of China, extending the term to five years.
The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic renewed a currency swap agreement with the People's Bank of China valued at approximately $19 billion. The new deal extends the duration of the swap line to five years, representing a two-year increase over previous terms. This arrangement secures a critical source of reserves for Argentina through the 2027 presidential election.
The agreement follows a meeting in Shanghai between Central Bank President Santiago Bausili and PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng. While the activated portion of the swap has been used since 2023 to finance imports and payments to the International Monetary Fund, current figures show only $680 million of the roughly $5 billion activated amount remains outstanding.
This renewal maintains a financial partnership that has existed since 2009. The agreement persists despite geopolitical tensions and concerns expressed by U.S. officials regarding Argentina's reliance on Chinese financing.
