AI Innovation Drives Shift to Optical Data Center Infrastructure

AI infrastructure is transitioning from copper to optical connections, sparking a surge in demand for high-speed hardware and specialized optical components.

The rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence innovation is forcing a fundamental transition in data center infrastructure. To meet the processing demands of AI, operators are replacing traditional copper wiring with faster, more energy-efficient optical connections. This shift has created a surge in demand for optical hardware, which analysts suggest may become a significant bottleneck in the build-out of AI infrastructure.

Marvell Technology, Inc. and Broadcom Inc are leading the production of optical digital signal processors (DSPs) required to convert electrical signals from AI chip clusters into light. To further integrate these capabilities, Nvidia Corporation invested $2 billion in Marvell Technology, Inc. to incorporate optical networking into its NVLink ecosystem.

Other critical components include photonic lasers and transceivers. Lumentum Holdings Inc. produces high-power indium phosphide lasers and optical engines, while Coherent Corp. and Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. provide vertically integrated materials and transceivers for cloud providers, including Microsoft. As AI clusters expand across multiple facilities, the industry is increasingly relying on high-density fiber cables and long-distance optical routing systems to manage traffic between data centers.
