S&P 500 Concentration Drives Record Negative Beta Stocks

Goldman Sachs and other firms report that nearly half of S&P 500 stocks are moving opposite to the index due to extreme tech concentration.

Approximately 40% to 45% of stocks in the S&P 500 currently exhibit a negative three-month beta, indicating their returns move in the opposite direction of the overall index. Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management reported this trend, which is driven primarily by extreme market concentration. A small group of mega-cap technology companies and AI infrastructure beneficiaries are propelling the index upward while a large volume of smaller-weighted stocks decline.

Other sectors contributing to this divergence include utilities, consumer staples, and energy, with the energy sector specifically acting as a hedge against geopolitical pressure. AllianceBernstein found an unprecedented share of U.S. stocks displaying negative beta in July, while Evercore ISI Institutional Equities identified 115 S&P 500 stocks with negative beta using a six-month measure.

Market analysts note that while similar patterns occurred during the 1999-2000 dot-com bubble, the current leading technology companies are more mature businesses with established revenues. This suggests a different market environment despite statistical signals of dispersion that mirror the period preceding the dot-com crash.
