Spotify Tests One-Tap Podcast Ad Skipping for Premium Users
Spotify is testing a feature allowing Premium subscribers to skip publisher-sold podcast ads, sparking debate over the impact on creator revenue.
Spotify is testing a Skip Ahead button for Premium subscribers in select markets, including the United States and United Kingdom. The feature allows users to bypass podcast advertisements, sponsorships, and promotional segments with a single tap, though it specifically excludes ads sold directly by Spotify.
This distinction creates a two-tiered system that protects Spotify's own advertising revenue while making publisher-sold ads skippable. The move has drawn criticism from industry figures like Crooked Media co-founder Tommy Vietor, who accused the company of undermining its partners. Some major audio networks have expressed concern that the tool will lead to significant revenue losses for creators.
Other industry leaders suggest the material impact may be minimal. Oxford Advertising CEO Dan Granger noted that ad skipping is often scarier in theory than in practice, while Acast CEO Greg Glenday observed that podcast ads maintain high effectiveness scores. Glenday added that while some creators on the Acast platform are unhappy and may seek recourse, current skip rates remain low and similar functions already exist on other platforms.
Spotify stated the test is intended to make podcast listening and viewing more intuitive for paid subscribers. The company indicated it will evolve the feature based on user feedback and platform usage data.
