Tesla Begins Production of Optimus Humanoid Robots
Tesla has started manufacturing production-quality Optimus humanoid robots at its Fremont factory after halting Model S and Model X production.
Tesla Inc. has begun producing its Optimus humanoid robot at its Fremont factory in California, as disclosed in the company's quarterly earnings report. The company stated that the units currently leaving the line are the first production-quality bots manufactured and that the current process is suitable for a commercial product. A commercial release date has not yet been announced.
To make room for the Optimus line, which is designed to eventually produce one million robots annually, Tesla ceased production of the Model S and Model X at the Fremont plant earlier this year. The company is also constructing a second production line in Austin, Texas, with a planned annual capacity of 10 million robots.
CEO Elon Musk has previously cautioned that scaling production will be "agonizingly slow." Tesla enters a competitive humanoid robotics market alongside firms including Agility Robotics, Figure AI, Sunday Robotics, 1X, and Weave Robotics.
