Lisa Demuth Proposes Mass Firings to Combat Minnesota Fraud

Republican gubernatorial nominee Lisa Demuth pledged to fire all state agency heads and ban foreign transfers of public funds to eliminate government fraud.

Republican gubernatorial nominee and Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth unveiled a comprehensive anti-fraud roadmap on August 18 following her primary victory. If elected governor, Demuth plans to fire all current state commissioners and deputy commissioners within her first 90 days to eliminate a culture of fraud. Her proposal includes a lifetime ban on state benefits for those convicted of defrauding public agencies, guaranteed jail time, and asset seizure.

Demuth's plan specifically targets the transfer of public funds to foreign countries, proposing measures to ensure noncitizens use benefits only within Minnesota. She also intends to appoint her running mate, Ryan Wilson, to lead a new fraud oversight committee and direct the Minnesota Department of Human Services to unfreeze funds for legitimate service providers currently stalled by federal revalidation.

Democratic-Farm-Labor nominee and U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar countered these claims by highlighting her role in securing more prosecutors for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which led to over 70 charges in the Feeding Our Future scheme. Klobuchar's own proposal focuses on a government-wide audit, the creation of anti-fraud units, and a Do Not Pay database to block fraud convicts from receiving state grants.

DFL Party Chair Richard Carlbom dismissed Demuth's proposals as empty political rhetoric. Meanwhile, Demuth characterized Klobuchar as a Washington insider and a third term for former Governor Tim Walz, alleging Klobuchar ignored a fraud crisis costing taxpayers an estimated $9 billion.
