América Móvil Eyes Pay-TV Entry After AT&T Mexico Sale
América Móvil CEO Daniel Hajj expects the $2 billion sale of AT&T Mexico to Grupo Televisa to enable his company to offer pay-TV services.
CEO Daniel Hajj expects the acquisition of AT&T Mexico by Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings to create a regulatory opening for América Móvil to offer pay-TV services in Mexico. The company has historically been restricted from providing such services because of its status as the country's preponderant economic agent in telecommunications.
AT&T announced on October 13 that it agreed to sell its Mexican operations for $2 billion in cash to prioritize its U.S. fiber and 5G networks. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approvals. Hajj noted that while Televisa's post-acquisition strategy is not yet clear, the company will be a strong competitor.
In response to the shifting market, América Móvil plans to continue investing in 5G coverage, network quality, and its distribution network of nearly 700 customer care centers.
