Meta Launches Muse AI Hardware and Shifts Focus to Superintelligence

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a new hardware strategy at the annual Meta Connect conference, centering on the Muse AI agent. The centerpiece of this shift is the Muse Charm, a pocket-watch-sized pendant featuring a fingerprint sensor that allows users to access AI capabilities directly, bypassing smartphone applications. The Muse agent is designed to automate complex tasks such as booking flights, paying bills, and filing taxes.

Zuckerberg announced a strategic pivot toward personal superintelligence, characterizing it as a more immediate and significant breakthrough than the metaverse. As part of this hardware push, Meta introduced slimmer Meta VR Glasses priced at $1,299 for next year, which weigh 100 grams and utilize an external computing puck. The company also announced camera-free smart glasses to address privacy concerns and plans to offer over 100 styles of AI glasses by the end of 2026.

This strategy aims to reduce Meta's reliance on Apple's distribution and privacy policies. Zuckerberg intends to monetize the Muse agent by taking small fees from transactions completed through the service. While investors responded positively, with Meta's stock rising 4.5% on Thursday, some analysts question whether the Muse Charm will achieve mass-market adoption or remain a niche product for early adopters and Gen Z consumers. Zuckerberg also told NBC News that AI companies should police themselves despite increasing calls for government regulation.
