India Reaffirms Commitment to Afghan Development and Humanitarian Aid

The Government of India reaffirmed its commitment to Afghan stability through infrastructure projects, humanitarian aid, and educational scholarships for thousands of students.

The Government of India reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and development of the Afghan people on June 9, 2026. This position follows a United Nations Security Council meeting on June 8, where India's Permanent Representative, Parvathaneni Harish, highlighted the deep civilizational ties between the two contiguous neighbors.

India currently supports over 500 development projects across all 34 Afghan provinces, with a focus on public infrastructure, healthcare, and capacity building. Recent healthcare initiatives include the construction of a thalassaemia centre in Herat and a 30-bed hospital in Kabul. Since August 2021, India has delivered 50,000 tonnes of wheat, 420 tonnes of medicines, and 40,000 litres of pesticide to the region.

Educational support has also expanded, with India providing opportunities to approximately 3,000 Afghan students since 2023, including 1,000 women. The government plans to offer an additional 1,000 scholarships to further support Afghan youth. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that these efforts aim to foster long-term peace and stability in the region.
