Origin Energy Data Breach Exposes 4.8 Million Customers

Origin Energy confirmed a data breach potentially exposing personal and financial information of 4.8 million customers following a reported private settlement with a hacker.

Origin Energy confirmed a data breach that potentially exposed the personal information of 4.8 million customers. The compromised data may include names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, account information, and partial financial details, such as the last four digits of credit cards or the last three digits of bank accounts.

Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria apologized for the incident and stated the company is working with independent cyber experts to secure its systems. While the company has not confirmed the total number of affected individuals, an alleged hacker claimed to have accessed two million records. That individual later reported to a media outlet that a private settlement had been reached with the company to prevent the data from being leaked.

Cybersecurity experts warn that this specific set of data could enable hyper-targeted phishing campaigns enhanced by generative AI.
