Osun Governor and APC Trade Accusations After State-Wide Shootings
Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress trade blame for political violence and shootings across Osun State ahead of the August governorship election.
A wave of political violence and sporadic shootings swept across Osun State on June 9 and 10, 2026, leaving at least three people injured and potentially several dead. The unrest began in Ile-Ife during an All Progressives Congress (APC) mobilization walk and spread to Osogbo and Ede, creating widespread panic among residents.
Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State, attributed the attacks to thugs supporting APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji. He condemned the actions as deliberate provocations and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain APC leadership. Conversely, the APC Governorship Campaign Council alleged that thugs loyal to the governor, the PDP, and the Accord Party vandalized campaign buses in Owode-Ede and assaulted party members. The APC further claimed that state appointee Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf is leading armed militias using governor-branded buses.
Bola Oyebamiji, the APC governorship candidate, condemned the violence and called for a return to democratic principles, pledging to prioritize security if elected. The Osun State Police Command confirmed reports of shootings in Owode-Ede and Osogbo and has launched an investigation. Law enforcement officials stated that perpetrators have not yet been linked to any specific political party.
