Zamfara Assembly Speaker Dismisses Defection of Suspended Lawmakers
Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki clarified that eight lawmakers who defected from the All Progressives Congress were already suspended for gross misconduct.
Speaker Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki clarified that eight lawmakers who recently defected from the All Progressives Congress were already under suspension when they made their political move. The Zamfara State House of Assembly originally suspended the members on February 26, 2024, following allegations of gross misconduct, including conspiracy, contempt of the House, and convening an illegal sitting.
Specific accusations against the lawmakers include burglary, forcible entry into the offices of the Clerk and Sergeant-at-Arms, and the destruction of public property. These actions resulted in a criminal complaint being filed against the members. The House later extended these suspensions on May 13, 2026, citing unresolved disciplinary issues.
Moriki dismissed the defection as an attempt to create a false impression of instability and divert attention from the ongoing disciplinary matters. He maintained that the Assembly remains functional with 16 active members and continues to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.
