Federal Reserve Expected to Hold Rates Before December Hike

The Federal Reserve is projected to maintain current interest rates in October before potentially implementing a rate hike by December 2026.

The Federal Reserve Bank of the US is expected to keep interest rates steady during its October meeting before resuming monetary tightening, according to a commentary by CareEdge Global. Market data from CME FedWatch shows a 78.4% probability that the federal funds rate will remain between 3.75% and 4.00% in October, though there is a 68.1% probability of a 25 basis point increase to 4.00-4.25% by December 2026.

CareEdge Global attributes this hawkish outlook to high Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index readings in September, alongside geopolitical instability linked to the US-Israel conflict. The ratings agency noted that the Federal Open Market Committee's May meeting minutes and an August speech by Kevin Warsh further strengthened expectations for rate hikes.

The agency warned that additional tightening could increase fiscal pressure on the United States, noting that gross interest payments consumed roughly 19% of government revenue in 2025. Beyond the US, CareEdge Global highlighted global economic headwinds, including political volatility in Brazil and investment delays in Mexico caused by uncertainties surrounding the USMCA review.
