Australia Maintains Fuel Security as Petrol Prices Surge

Energy Minister Chris Bowen ruled out extending government fuel excise discounts on Saturday, despite a surge in national petrol prices. The average cost of unleaded petrol rose from $1.82 a litre in July to $2.09 by Friday, driven by the expiration of those discounts and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Bowen stated that Australia's fuel security remains stable, with national stockpiles currently holding 42 days of petrol, 36 days of diesel, and 34 days of jet fuel. An additional three billion litres of fuel are expected to arrive over the next month via 42 ships currently en route.

While the cost of living has increased, the Motor Trades Association of Australia reports no evidence of panic buying or significant driver frustration. This stability is attributed to a better public understanding of price drivers compared to the onset of the Iran-US war in February.

Opposition criticism focused on fiscal management. Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume criticized the government for failing to find budget offsets for the original fuel excise cut, arguing that this lack of planning created additional pressures on the national budget.
