China Criticizes Taiwan's DPP Over Cross-Strait Decoupling Policies
Zhang Han of China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the Democratic Progressive Party for pursuing economic decoupling and restricting travel to the mainland.
The State Council Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for implementing policies that promote cross-Strait decoupling. During a press briefing in Beijing on June 10, 2026, Zhang Han, the agency's spokesperson, described these strategies as extremely foolish and detrimental to the island's economy.
Zhang argued that the DPP has allowed Taiwan's industrial structure to become dangerously concentrated in artificial intelligence, leading to the marginalization of traditional sectors. He further accused the party of pursuing a secessionist agenda for Taiwan independence by maintaining restrictions on group travel to the mainland, thereby ignoring the interests of the public and tourism operators.
In response to these trends, the government of China announced that its 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026-2030 will include measures to support cross-Strait industrial cooperation. The plan intends to assist Taiwanese businesses in upgrading traditional industries to counter the effects of the current decoupling policies.
