Cape Verde Celebrates World Cup Run and 51st Independence Day

Cape Verde celebrates its 51st Independence Day and the national soccer team's historic run as the smallest nation to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

The Government of Cape Verde and its global diaspora celebrated the nation's 51st Independence Day from Portugal alongside the historic 2026 FIFA World Cup performance of the national soccer team, the Blue Sharks. The team became the smallest nation to ever reach the tournament's knockout stages before losing 3-2 in extra time to Argentina in a Round of 32 match held in Miami.

Upon their return to Praia, the players received a hero's welcome with airport receptions and street parades. Head coach Bubista stated that the team's success was a product of resilience and hard work rather than luck. Minister of Culture and Sports Antonio Duarte and Consul General Octavio Gomes credited the players with elevating the country's global status and serving as international ambassadors.

In the United States, the Cape Verdean community in Boston—the largest such population in the U.S. with over 70,000 residents—held a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall Plaza. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu attended the event to commemorate the national anniversary and the team's achievement, expressing her intention to bring the players to Boston for a homecoming visit.
