Major U.S. Banks See Shares Fall Despite Mixed Q3 Results
Six major U.S. banks saw their stock prices decline following third-quarter earnings reports due to investor anxiety over inflation and interest rates.
Shares of six major U.S. banks fell this week following the release of mixed third-quarter financial results. Despite several institutions reporting strong growth, investors reacted negatively to the broader economic outlook, prioritizing risks associated with persistent inflation, rising interest rates, and unstable capital markets over current earnings performance.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley both exceeded expectations, with Goldman Sachs reporting a 72% surge in equities trading revenue and Morgan Stanley seeing 18% revenue growth in its Institutional Securities Group. Citigroup also recorded its strongest third-quarter revenue growth in a decade, increasing by 8%.
Other institutions faced significant headwinds. Bank of America missed both revenue and earnings expectations and incurred a $1.2 billion regulatory penalty for alleged violations of sanctions laws and anti-money-laundering regulations. Chase Bank also missed top and bottom line expectations, citing weakness in fixed income trading and asset management. Wells Fargo reported mixed results, beating earnings estimates but missing its revenue targets.
