Brazilian Court Suspends Presidential Candidacy of Renan Santos

Justice José Antonio Dias Toffoli of the Supreme Court and the Electoral Court of Brazil suspended the presidential candidacy of Renan Santos. The court's decision follows allegations that the Santos campaign failed to correctly register its social-media handles.

Santos, a liberal political outsider and founder of the Free Brazil Movement, is running for president under the Missão party. His platform emphasizes free-market economics and a pragmatic approach to state ownership, paired with hardline security policies. He has praised the methods of El Salvador's Nayib Bukele and utilized the slogan "Catch, Kill" to describe his security stance.

The Missão party continues to field 57 candidates for Congress in the general elections scheduled for October. The Santos campaign has announced its intention to appeal the suspension to restore his eligibility for the race.
