Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Reports 9.5 Percent First-Half Return
The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan earned $26.6 billion in net investment income for the first half of 2026, driven largely by a SpaceX IPO.
The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan reported a 9.5 per cent return for the first half of 2026, generating $26.6 billion in net investment income for the period ending June 30. The fund's performance was significantly bolstered by an early investment in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), which went public on June 12.
Following the initial public offering, the pension plan's stake in SpaceX peaked at nearly US$8.7 billion by June 30, before declining to approximately US$6.7 billion by August 8. This shift reflects a broader strategic move toward venture investments, which now comprise 9 per cent of the plan's $303.2 billion in total assets, up from 4 per cent the previous year.
Chief Executive Officer Jo Taylor stated that the first-half returns exceeded the plan's target, noting "positive returns across asset classes". As of January 1, 2026, the plan remained fully funded with a preliminary funding surplus of $31.2 billion.
