Opposition Parties Meet in Abuja to Challenge Tinubu in 2027

Opposition political figures and party leaders gathered at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on August 31, 2026, for a summit organized by the political pressure group G-100. The meeting aimed to establish a coordinated political front and develop strategies to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 presidential election.

Participants included the Social Democratic Party and the Peoples Redemption Party, with attendees such as presidential candidates Adewale Adebayo and Donald Duke, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu. The Peoples Democratic Party declined to participate, stating it was unaware of the gathering. During the summit, G-100 convener Salihu Lukman urged parties to prioritize collective national interests over individual ambitions, arguing that a unified platform must be established before negotiating specific roles.

Peoples Redemption Party National Chairman Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed used the forum to question the current leadership of the country. He noted that President Tinubu had departed for a three-week vacation in Europe while Vice President Kashim Shettima was in Luanda, Angola, for an African Union session. Baba-Ahmed alleged that the president's trip was an emergency measure to avoid the release of documents by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, though he provided no evidence for the claim.
