Indonesia Detains Three Police Generals for Wiretapping President
Indonesian authorities detained three senior police generals for illegally wiretapping President Prabowo Subianto and dozens of other prominent figures between 2025 and 2026.
Indonesian authorities detained three senior police generals on Tuesday, November 3, for allegedly wiretapping President Prabowo Subianto and dozens of other prominent figures between 2025 and 2026. The suspects include Presidential Chief of Staff General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, National Police Legal Division head Inspector General Ahrie Sonta Nasution, and Inspector General Eko Hadi Santoso.
Investigators from the National Police's Criminal Investigation Agency allege the officers used the Lawful Interception Management System without legal basis or verification, violating 2010 National Police regulations. The suspects reportedly targeted state officials, political figures, journalists, NGO activists, and businesspeople. To conceal the operation, the officers allegedly ordered the deletion of electronic files.
Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated there is no indication of treason, though he characterized the surveillance of a president as a serious matter. The suspects are currently held at the police headquarters detention center in South Jakarta. They face charges under the Criminal Code and the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, which carry potential prison sentences of up to 10 years.
