Green Party Leader Demands Pause on UK Data Centers

The leader of the Green Party, Zack Polanski, has called on the United Kingdom government to pause the construction of new data centers to address the environmental and societal impacts of AI-driven infrastructure. Polanski argues that the 2024 designation of data centers as critical infrastructure allows these facilities to be prioritized over households, public services, and essential food production for water and electricity, which he warns could lead to water shortages during droughts.

Polanski characterized the Labour government's response to these risks as "negligible and negligent." He is demanding tighter planning rules and mandatory community consultations to ensure democratic accountability. He specifically urged the government to establish clear criteria to distinguish between data centers vital to national security and those that primarily serve private profit.

While not calling for a total moratorium, Polanski maintains that the current system allows data centers to be "waved through" by the government, potentially driving up energy bills and putting local communities at risk. He argues that data should serve people rather than the reverse, insisting that private tech companies should not receive priority over public needs.
