Maha Vikas Aghadi Wins Three Maharashtra Legislative Council Seats

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance secured three of five seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections, dealing a blow to the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance won three of five seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council biennial elections, while the ruling Mahayuti alliance secured two. The MVA's victory included wins by NCP-SP candidates Harshada Deshmukh Jadhav in Pune and Pratapsinh Patil in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, as well as a significant upset in Nagpur.

In Nagpur, Congress candidate Abhijit Wanjari defeated BJP candidate Sudhakar Kohale by 2,500 votes. The result was decided during the third-preference count after ballots from independent candidate Nilesh Karande shifted the lead to Wanjari. The loss in Nagpur, the hometown of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, caused public embarrassment for Fadnavis, who deleted a tweet ridiculing the Congress after prematurely claiming they received a "big fatty zero."

Mahayuti's two seats came from the BJP's Kaustubh Gawade in Pune and Shiv Sena's Kiran Sarnaik in Amravati. The results triggered internal friction within Mahayuti, as the BJP expressed frustration over Shiv Sena's support for an independent candidate in Pune. Within the NCP, National Working President Praful Patel called the results a "definitive wake-up call" and urged "urgent introspection" for party leadership. UBT Sena MP Sanjay Raut characterized the MVA's performance as a defeat of "autocracy," a claim disputed by the BJP.
