Montana Group Seeks Public Vote on Data Center Impacts

The grassroots organization Yellowstone Valley Voices is pursuing an amended initiative to secure a public vote and an independent expert review regarding the environmental and social impacts of data centers in Yellowstone County, Montana. This effort follows a court defeat last month that invalidated the group's original attempt to collect signatures.

Attorney Brian Miller, representing the group, argues that the review must be conducted by experts with no ties to the data center industry. Miller specifically called for studies on hydrology and potential adverse social effects, including the impact of temporary worker housing, or man camps, on local law enforcement and drug use.

Industry proponents contrast these concerns with the economic transformation of Quincy, Washington, where a Microsoft data center campus built 20 years ago is credited with reducing poverty and funding critical infrastructure, including schools and a level four trauma emergency room. Kelly Schulz of the Maryland Tech Council suggests that while some cities have implemented moratoriums, communities can secure vast benefits by treating data center development as a negotiating opportunity to benefit their constituencies.
