Indian Markets Open Samvat 2083 With Mixed Muhurat Trading

The BSE and NSE held a special Muhurat trading session on November 8 to mark the start of Samvat 2083 amid shifting foreign investment patterns.

The Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India conducted a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session on November 8, 2026, to mark the start of the Hindu financial year, Samvat 2083. The session followed a strong seven-day rally driven by aggressive buying from foreign institutional investors, who invested Rs 45,970 crore in November as they shifted focus away from AI-related sell-offs in US and Asian markets.

Market performance during the session was volatile. Indices opened with strong gains, with the Sensex jumping nearly 400 points and the Nifty crossing 25,100. However, reports on the closing figures varied; some data indicated the Sensex closed up 0.33% at 81,294.69, while other reports stated the indices ended marginally lower, with the Sensex dipping 0.04% to 80,999.40 and the Nifty falling 0.18% to 24,986.40. If the latter is accurate, the session snapped an eight-year streak of Diwali gains.

This transition follows a difficult Samvat 2082, where the Sensex and Nifty shed 8% and 7% respectively, their worst performance in 15 years. Analysts attribute that decline to high crude oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty. Looking ahead to Samvat 2083, experts anticipate an earnings-led recovery. Raamdeo Agrawal suggested the market has the potential for bumper returns by next Diwali due to a confluence of low valuations and high earnings growth, while others cautioned that direction will depend on corporate earnings and global developments.
