Palau Hosts Pacific Islands Forum Amid China-Taiwan Tensions

Palau is hosting the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting, marking the first time since 2019 that a nation recognizing Taiwan has hosted the regional bloc. Surangel Whipps Jr. defended the inclusion of Taiwan in associated events, describing the island as a development partner and a contributor to PIF funding and the Pacific Resilience Facility.

Taiwan responded by sending a high-level delegation led by its foreign minister and donating $2 million to support the forum's 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. The United States is also returning to the forum after being blocked from participation last year, while Palau simultaneously upgrades U.S. military facilities.

China's foreign ministry opposed Taiwan's participation, and the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism issued a travel warning for Palau, citing theft and robbery. The United States Embassy in Koror rejected the warning, accusing Beijing of attempting to weaponize tourism to coerce the Palauan government.
