Tô Lâm Visits Denmark to Upgrade Green Strategic Partnership
President Tô Lâm began a state visit to Denmark on October 19 to strengthen green energy ties and propose a more comprehensive strategic framework.
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Tô Lâm began a series of diplomatic visits to Denmark, the European Union, and Belgium on October 19, 2026. The trip marks the first state visit to Denmark by a Vietnamese Party General Secretary and the first official visits to the EU and Belgium by Tô Lâm. In Copenhagen, he was received with a solemn welcome ceremony by King Frederik X and Queen Mary, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
During a meeting at Amalienborg Palace, King Frederik X presented Tô Lâm with the Order of the Elephant, Denmark's highest honor for foreign heads of state. The leaders discussed the expansion of Danish enterprises in Vietnam, such as LEGO, Pandora, and Carlsberg, and reviewed the progress of the Green Strategic Partnership established in 2023.
In a policy speech at the University of Copenhagen, Tô Lâm proposed upgrading the Green Strategic Partnership to a more comprehensive strategic framework. He advocated for a shift from assistance to "co-creation," specifically targeting offshore wind power and the ASEAN Power Grid. To deepen educational ties, he invited the University of Copenhagen to open a campus in Vietnam, offering favorable land and taxation conditions. This initiative is part of a broader Vietnamese growth model aiming for double-digit growth through digital innovation and clean technology.
