South Africa and Zimbabwe Negotiate $500 Million Dam Project
South Africa and Zimbabwe are negotiating a $500 million project to build the Thuli Moswa dam to supply water to a South African industrial zone.
The Government of South Africa and the Government of Zimbabwe are negotiating a $500 million agreement to construct the Thuli Moswa dam in Zimbabwe. The project aims to secure a reliable water supply for the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone in South Africa's Limpopo province, an industrial hub designed for metals processing and energy-intensive manufacturing.
The proposed dam would feature a storage capacity of 430 million cubic meters and provide up to 90 million cubic meters of water to the zone. South Africa's Water Department confirmed that both nations are currently discussing a joint feasibility study to facilitate the water transfer. The initiative is driven by chronic water shortages and increasing industrial demand within South Africa.
While an official start date has not been established, project documents suggest an 18-month preparation phase followed by three years of construction. Under the proposed terms, South Africa would pay for the water through an agreement lasting between five and 35 years.
