Ethiopian Ambassador Challenges UK Editorial on National Crisis
Biruk Mekonnen, the Ethiopian ambassador to the UK, defended Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and rejected claims that Ethiopia's national interests cause regional instability.
Ethiopian ambassador to the UK Biruk Mekonnen challenged a recent editorial regarding the crisis in Ethiopia, arguing the account was incomplete and unfairly framed Ethiopia's national interests as sources of regional instability. Mekonnen defended Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, asserting that the subsequent war in Tigray does not erase the achievement of peace with Eritrea.
Mekonnen contended that the crisis must be understood through the lens of Eritrean aggression and a foreign policy that benefits from a weak Ethiopia. He stated that Ethiopia's efforts to secure Red Sea access and develop Nile resources are rights of sovereignty rather than threats.
Regarding potential resolutions, Mekonnen warned that calls for a truce must not reward armed aggression with political leverage or pressure Ethiopia into concessions.
