Google Launches Googlebook Laptops Powered by Aluminum OS

Google will officially unveil the Googlebook, a new category of flagship laptops, at a media event in New York City on September 16, 2026. Pre-orders for the devices are scheduled to begin September 21 at 9 a.m. ET, primarily through the Google Store. The laptops are designed to replace the Chromebook line, transitioning from ChromeOS to a new Android-based technology stack called Aluminum OS.

Aluminum OS allows the devices to run Android applications natively rather than through emulation, while maintaining the full desktop version of Chrome. The hardware will be produced by original equipment manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Leaked specifications for a Lenovo model suggest high-end hardware featuring Intel Core Ultra Panther Lake processors and 2.8K OLED displays, with overall pricing anticipated between $700 and $1,000.

The devices integrate Gemini AI at their core, featuring a Magic Pointer for contextual interaction, AI-generated custom widgets, and dedicated physical keyboard buttons to summon the AI. The Googlebook is positioned as a companion for Android devices, allowing users to cast phone apps and access mobile files directly on the laptop. This shift positions the hardware as a direct competitor to macOS and Windows AI PCs.
