Pete Hegseth Denies Reports of Underreported Iran War Deaths

The Washington Post reported on September 18, 2026, that the United States Department of War has underreported military fatalities in the ongoing war with Iran. While the public Defense Casualty Analysis System lists 18 deaths, internal data suggests at least 22 to 23 service members and three contractors have died since the conflict began on February 28. The report alleges some deaths, including those of Sgt. Devin Seibel in Iraq and Maj. Sorffly Davius in Kuwait, were categorized as unrelated missions or overseas operations despite occurring at bases attacked by Iran.

Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, condemned the allegations on X, calling the report a "complete LIE" and "DISGUSTING and FAKE." He further claimed the publication is "worse than Iranian state media." While Hegseth has rejected the claims, the Pentagon has otherwise declined to address the discrepancy.

The conflict, known as Operation Epic Fury, has cost approximately $43.6 billion and resulted in over 820 wounded service members. The casualty accounting has become a political flashpoint ahead of the November midterm elections, with Democratic lawmakers pursuing legislation to prevent the manipulation of troop data. Additionally, Representative Thomas Massie has moved to impeach Hegseth, alleging violations of the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
