Nigerian Medical Graduate Dies After Russian Strike in Kharkiv
The Government of Nigeria called for a cessation of hostilities after Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old medical graduate, died from injuries sustained in a Russian airstrike.
Nnani Adaobi Marian, a 23-year-old Nigerian medical student, died on July 5, 2026, from severe burns covering approximately 90 percent of her body. She was injured on June 29 when the Military of Russia dropped aerial bombs on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, Ukraine. Marian and her friend, Fatima Huseynova, were traveling to a graduation photoshoot at the time of the attack; Huseynova was killed instantly.
Kharkiv National Medical University reported that Marian was only one exam away from graduating when the strike occurred. After receiving initial treatment in Kharkiv, she was transferred to a hospital in Germany for specialized care before she succumbed to her injuries. The broader Russian strikes across the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions resulted in 14 deaths and 98 injuries.
The Government of Nigeria expressed profound sadness and extended condolences to the victim's family. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is coordinating with diplomatic missions in Ukraine and Germany to verify the incident and provide consular assistance. Nigerian authorities used the tragedy to reiterate concerns over civilian casualties and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomacy in accordance with international law.
