William Ruto Commissions Raila Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo
President William Ruto dedicated the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo, handing the pentagonal structure over to the former Prime Minister's family.
President William Ruto commissioned and dedicated the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, on October 7, 2026. The ceremony took place during Mwezi wa Baba, a month honoring the former Prime Minister's legacy, shortly before the first anniversary of Odinga's death on October 15, 2025.
Constructed by the Kenya Defence Forces, the mausoleum features a pentagonal design symbolizing the raised fist gesture associated with Odinga. Designers noted the five-sided geometry represents a call for national unity rather than defiance and references the Pentagon, a group of five senior Orange Democratic Movement leaders from the 2007 campaign. The structure also maintains an architectural relationship with the hexagonal mausoleum of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
During the event, Ruto delivered a presidential citation describing Odinga as a "once-in-a-generation leader" and formally handed the site over to the Odinga family. While Mama Ida Odinga attended, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga missed the ceremony due to hospitalization. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi later visited Oburu in the hospital to brief him on the proceedings.
The site has transitioned to the stewardship of the National Museums of Kenya to ensure professional conservation and documentation. The ceremony concluded with the planting of a commemorative tree.
