Violent Flamingo Revolution Protests Hit Tirana State Institutions
Thousands of protesters in Tirana attacked government buildings and luxury sites amid a broader movement against corruption and Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Anti-government protests in Tirana escalated into violent confrontations on October 13 and 14, 2026, as thousands of students and demonstrators attacked state institutions and luxury buildings. The unrest, termed the Flamingo Revolution, began in May 2026 in opposition to a tourism project in Zvërnec linked to Jared Kushner. The movement has since expanded into a broader campaign against systemic corruption, inequality, and the administration of Edi Rama.
Demonstrators targeted the prime minister's office, the Education Ministry, and parliamentary offices. Riot police responded with water cannons and tear gas, resulting in injuries to police officers, journalists, demonstrators, and a foreign diplomat. The crisis is driven by public anger over luxury construction projects linked to money laundering and corruption investigations involving officials such as Vlora Hyseni and Belinda Balluku.
Government officials condemned the vandalism, with Interior Minister Ervin Demo defending police operations and suggesting potential foreign involvement in the unrest. President Bajram Begaj and Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu called for restraint and the rejection of violence. Internationally, the European Union, Germany, and Britain expressed concern over the escalation and requested investigations into allegations of excessive police force.
