Ukraine Denies State Role in Nord Stream Pipeline Bombing

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine denied state involvement in the 2022 Nord Stream bombings and proposed a joint investigation with Germany.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine announced Thursday that judicial authorities found no evidence linking the Ukrainian state or its officials to the 2022 bombing of the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea. This statement comes as a response to German prosecutors filing charges against Serhiy K., a former Ukrainian soldier accused of coordinating the sabotage.

German authorities believe the attacks were carried out on behalf of a foreign state, specifically Ukrainian entities, to disrupt Russian war financing. However, Ukraine maintains that its own internal investigations have not corroborated these claims. The Federal Court of Justice further complicated the legal standing of the accused by ruling that the former soldier cannot claim combatant privilege for the sabotage acts.

To resolve the discrepancy between the two nations' findings, the Ukrainian prosecutor general proposed the formation of a joint investigative team with Germany. The office stated that Ukraine is prepared to help clarify the facts of the case as the investigation into the September 2022 blasts continues.
