Treasury Prepares Major Overhaul of Bond Issuance Guidance
The United States Department of the Treasury plans to shift its debt issuance strategy to lower bond yields in a quarterly policy statement this Wednesday.
Wall Street financial dealers are preparing for a significant overhaul of U.S. Treasury issuance guidance, expected in a quarterly policy statement this Wednesday. The shift follows recent interventions by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to lower bond yields.
Market participants anticipate the Treasury will reduce the sale of longest-dated debt in 2027. To offset these reductions, the department is expected to increase the auctions of bills and shorter-term notes.
This move would mark the most substantial change to issuance guidance since early 2024. It represents a departure from the steady issuance plans the government has maintained for more than two years.
