Mike Johnson Mocks Democrats After Socialist Primary Wins
House Speaker Mike Johnson claimed the Democratic Party is in a civil war after socialist-linked candidates defeated establishment Democrats in New York primaries.
House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Democratic Party during a campaign stop in Virginia Beach, describing the party as a rudderless ship in the midst of an open civil war. Johnson's remarks followed primary election losses for establishment Democrats endorsed by Jeffries to candidates linked to the Democratic Socialists of America and endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In New York, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat lost his seat in the 13th District to Darializa Avila Chevalier, while Representative Dan Goldman was defeated by Brad Lander in the 10th District. Johnson characterized the winning candidates as open Marxists who intend to abolish the border and the U.S. Senate.
Hakeem Jeffries responded by emphasizing a commitment to fighting for an affordable America. He maintained confidence in the party's future, stating his expectation that the House Democratic Caucus will secure at least 220 members when they regain the majority.
