Toyota Recalls 30,978 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrids Over Software Defect
Toyota is recalling nearly 31,000 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid vehicles in the United States to fix a software defect that can cause powertrain shutdowns.
Toyota is recalling 30,978 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a software defect in the motor generator electronic control unit. The fault can cause the plug-in hybrid system to reduce power or shut down completely while the vehicle is traveling at high speeds.
Federal regulators warn that an unexpected powertrain shutdown can cause a loss of drive power, which increases the risk of a crash. Toyota dealers will provide a software update to resolve the issue free of charge.
Notification timelines for affected owners differ between the automaker and regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expects owner notification letters to be mailed starting November 22, while Toyota stated that owners will be notified by early December.
