Apple Tests New Smartwatches and Develops AI Glasses

Apple is conducting late-stage testing for Series 12 and Ultra 4 smartwatches while developing AI-powered smart glasses for a 2027 release.

Apple Inc. is conducting late-stage testing for three new smartwatch models scheduled for a September announcement: the Apple Watch Series 12, available in Wi-Fi and cellular versions, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4. The company is prioritizing internal upgrades over exterior changes, maintaining the same silhouette as previous generations. These updates include health and fitness tracking enhancements and the first significant chip performance boost since the 2023 debut of the S9.

No new Apple Watch SE is expected this year following the 2025 release of the SE 3. Long-term development continues for a substantial hardware redesign anticipated in one to two years and a non-invasive blood glucose monitor expected later this decade.

Separately, the company is developing AI-powered smart glasses, internally codenamed N50, with a planned reveal at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2027 and a consumer release in late 2027. The device will feature acetate frames and hands-free access to Siri, music, and AI tools for navigation and object identification, though it will not include a display. Originally targeted for late 2026, the project was delayed to refine privacy strategies, including on-device processing and data collection limits to differentiate the product from competitors like Meta Platforms Incorporated.
