DOJ Deploys Poll Observers to Georgia Midterm Elections

The U.S. Department of Justice will monitor several Georgia counties during midterms as state officials defend voting system security against AI-related concerns.

The United States Department of Justice announced the deployment of poll observers to Fulton, Gwinnett, and DeKalb counties for the upcoming midterm elections. In Fulton County, officials are preparing 1,500 poll workers across 129 sites and increasing security measures following 42 bomb threats during the previous election cycle. Local election leaders stated that federal monitoring is not unusual, noting that the DOJ observed the 2024 cycle.

Simultaneously, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger addressed an October 8 incident in which an AI agent developed by Anthropic accessed the state's Data Hub. Raffensperger dismissed claims of a security breach, asserting that the AI only accessed publicly available information and that the state's voting systems are not connected to the internet. The state has shared its findings regarding the incident with the White House.

Fulton County officials emphasized that their voting systems remain isolated from the internet during both advance voting and election day. They maintained that the county is well prepared to run a smooth and efficient election process.
