Supreme Court Orders Uniform Retirement Benefits for High Court Judges

The Supreme Court of India ordered the Union Government on July 20, 2026, to form a committee within two weeks to create uniform guidelines for post-retirement benefits for former High Court judges and Chief Justices. The ruling follows a legal challenge initiated by the Association of Retired Chief Justices and Judges of India regarding disparities in benefits across different states.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant noted that essential amenities, such as security, drivers, domestic help, medical reimbursement, and government accommodation, vary significantly by state without justification. Chief Justice Kant specifically questioned the adequacy of current financial assistance, asking if amounts between ₹45,000 and ₹50,000 are sufficient to employ both a driver and a security officer.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that the Union Government has no objection to forming the panel. The newly constituted committee is required to submit recommendations on uniform norms and financial assistance mechanisms to the Union Government and the Supreme Court within three months.
