Germany Deports Uyghur Man to China Before Turkish Intervention

The Federal Government of Germany deported Arafat Adil, a 21-year-old Uyghur man and dual Chinese-Turkish national, from Frankfurt Airport to Beijing on July 21, 2026. Adil had been seeking asylum in Germany, but his application was unsuccessful. Upon arriving in Beijing the following morning, he was taken into custody and interrogated by Chinese authorities.

Following diplomatic intervention by the Government of Türkiye, Adil was permitted to leave China and arrived in Türkiye on July 23. His mother, Guzelay Adil, had expressed confusion over why German authorities deported him to China rather than Türkiye, where he holds citizenship and has lived since 2017.

The German Ministry of the Interior stated that while the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees generally grants protection to Uyghurs, there is no general suspension of deportations to China. Human rights organizations, including the World Uyghur Congress and the Society for Threatened Peoples, condemned the action as a violation of the principle of non-refoulement. Activists argued that the deportation placed Adil at risk of torture or forced labor in the Xinjiang region and called for a binding halt to all Uyghur deportations to China.
