India Reports 26.54 Lakh EV Sales Under PM E-DRIVE

The Ministry of Heavy Industries informed the Lok Sabha that the PM E-DRIVE scheme supported the sale of 26.54 lakh electric vehicles as of July 22, 2026. Running from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2028, the program has utilized Rs 2,322 crore of its total Rs 10,900 crore allocation.

Sales data shows a heavy concentration in smaller vehicles, including 23.79 lakh electric two-wheelers and 2.68 lakh three-wheelers. Additional support extended to 6,547 e-rickshaws and e-carts, 55 electric trucks, and a planned allocation for 14,000 e-buses. Maharashtra emerged as the leading state for EV support with 4.28 lakh vehicles.

Despite approving 5,871 EV chargers across nine states, the government clarified that no chargers had been installed under the scheme by the July 22 deadline. To address production and certification gaps, the government is using the Phased Manufacturing Programme to encourage indigenous production and has allocated Rs 780 crore to modernize four testing agencies: ARAI, ICAT, NATRAX, and GARC.
