Ontario Clarifies Multiple Voting Rules for Municipal Elections

The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing clarified that eligible voters may cast ballots in multiple municipal elections if they qualify as a resident elector in one municipality and a nonresident elector in others. To qualify as a nonresident elector, an individual or their spouse must personally own or rent property in that municipality. The ministry specified that nonresident status does not apply to properties owned by a trust or a business.

Similar eligibility rules apply to school board elections, provided the property is residential and the school boards differ from those of the voter's primary residence. All eligible voters must be Canadian citizens aged 18 or older.

The voters list was finalized on September 1, though citizens can update their information through municipal clerks until the close of voting on October 26. Voting methods vary by municipality and may include in-person, online, or telephone options. The Association of Municipalities of Ontario maintains the comprehensive list of available voting methods for each municipality.
