Bank Negara Malaysia Expected to Hold Interest Rates at 2.75%
Bank Negara Malaysia is expected to maintain its overnight policy rate at 2.75% on Thursday amid subdued inflation and resilient economic growth.
Bank Negara Malaysia is expected to maintain its overnight policy rate at 2.75% during its meeting on Thursday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg anticipate the hold because inflation eased to 1.8% in July, reducing the immediate need for tightening despite strong economic performance.
Malaysia's economy grew by 6% in the second quarter, surpassing central bank forecasts. This expansion was driven by domestic demand and exports related to artificial intelligence. The bank has kept borrowing costs steady for over a year following a rate cut in July 2025, which was implemented to mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs.
While the bank maintains its current stance, investors are watching for a potential shift toward policy normalization. In parallel, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim restored subsidized fuel quotas on September 1 to address cost-of-living pressures. The central bank also continues to implement measures to support the ringgit by encouraging foreign-exchange inflows.
