Uber and Wayve Launch London's First Commercial Robotaxi Service

Uber Technologies Inc. and British AI startup Wayve launched London's first commercial robotaxi service on September 4, 2026. The initial fleet comprises 15 to 20 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles powered by Wayve's AI Driver software, which relies on cameras and radar instead of lidar or high-definition maps.

To meet current regulatory requirements, every vehicle carries a licensed safety driver capable of taking manual control. Passengers may be matched with these autonomous vehicles at no extra cost when booking UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric rides. Fully driverless operations remain pending approvals from Transport for London, the Vehicle Certification Agency, and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

This deployment positions Uber ahead of Waymo, which is testing in the city but refuses to launch until it can operate without human safety drivers. The move aligns with a broader shift in Uber's strategy toward autonomous mobility, including a planned $10 billion investment in robotaxi partnerships, occurring alongside the company's reduction of approximately 3,300 staff members.
