Uber and Wayve Launch First Commercial Robotaxis in London
Uber and Wayve have deployed a fleet of AI-powered robotaxis in London, utilizing human safety drivers while awaiting full regulatory approval for driverless operations.
On September 4, 2026, Uber Technologies Inc. and British AI startup Wayve launched London's first commercial autonomous ride-hailing service. The initial fleet comprises 15 to 20 all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve's AI Driver software. Unlike many competitors, this technology relies on cameras and radar rather than lidar or HD maps, utilizing an assertive navigation style designed for the city's dense traffic.
To comply with current Transport for London private-hire licenses, every vehicle includes a licensed human safety driver. Fully driverless operations remain pending approval from the UK Department for Transport, the Vehicle Certification Agency, and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. Passengers cannot specifically request a robotaxi but may be matched with one via the Uber app for UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Electric rides at no additional cost.
British Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called the launch a "major milestone for the future of transport in London." However, the rollout faces opposition from labor unions, including the ADCU and GMB, which have raised concerns regarding liability frameworks and the legal status of safety drivers. The deployment is part of a broader strategy by Uber to scale autonomous mobility, with plans to expand the partnership to Tokyo and other global cities later this year.
