DSA Candidates Triple House Presence After Primary Wins
Democratic Socialists of America candidates won seven House primaries, tripling their congressional presence while facing mixed results in Senate races.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) tripled its presence in the U.S. House after candidates backed by the organization won seven of 25 primaries. These victories occurred primarily in deep-blue districts across New York, Michigan, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, a result likely to shift the Democratic caucus's position on Israel.
Despite these gains, the group faced significant setbacks, losing 18 House primaries. This included a notable defeat for Cori Bush in St. Louis. The organization also struggled in Senate races, where progressive candidates in Michigan, Minnesota, and Maine—who do not identify as democratic socialists—now face competitive general elections against Republicans.
In Florida, DSA member Angie Nixon secured a primary victory in a state Donald Trump won in 2024. Nixon currently trails Republican Senator Ashley Moody in some polls. Moody noted that several Republican Senate races have become unexpectedly close, observing that some polls show her leading while others show the candidates tied.
